Azerbaijan Looks to Increase Renewable Energy Production Capacity

Azerbaijan, a country that traditionally produces oil and gas, looks to increase the production capacity of renewable energy, local media reported.

Azerbaijani Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan Parviz Shahbazov announced his country’s plans while speaking at a panel discussion on energy security within the Diplomatic Forum in Antalya framework.

According to the minister, Azerbaijan contributes to electricity production in the region and the international market.

“Therefore, Azerbaijan is always active in world energy organizations. Today, at the forum in Antalya, we discussed existing energy problems, with international energy projects, particularly the Southern Gas Corridor”.

According to Shahbazov, the development of the SGC project, increasing its capacity and potential will be one of the most critical areas for the near future.

“Two days ago, during a visit to Ankara, President Ilham Aliyev met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. An agreement was reached on the further active development of energy cooperation between the two countries. Therefore, we will continue to work in this direction.” he outlines.

Azerbaijan intends to increase the share of renewable energy sources to 30% in total energy production by 2030. Hydroelectric power stations contribute with 17%, while solar and wind power share participate with 2%, Azerbaijani media reported.
