Azerbaijan, Romania Discuss Green Energy Cooperation

Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov met a delegation led Romanian Energy Minister Virgil-Daniel Popescu, Special Representative for Strategic Projects Ana Birchall, and senior officials of Transgaz and Romgaz companies, local media reported.

The meeting discussed priority areas of energy cooperation between the two countries. The strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Romania plays an essential role in developing cooperation in the energy sector, the Azerbaijan energy ministry noted.

The two sides also discussed a project for laying a fiber-optic cable through Azerbaijan and Georgia along the bottom of the Black Sea to Romania. Romania was invited to participate in the project and a working group is currently being formed.

Shahbazov, emphasizing the importance of the project in terms of expanding opportunities for exporting electricity between the region and the European market, brought to the attention of Azerbaijan’s potential and plans for the export of “green energy”.

He noted that the ongoing projects in renewable energy and plans to realize the potential of offshore wind energy in the future could make Azerbaijan an essential partner for Europe in the export of electricity and hydrogen generated from green energy sources.

The sides also exchanged views on other prospects for bilateral energy cooperation.
