Environmentalists urge British authorities to speed up energy transition

Britain needs to switch to renewable energy sources to protect itself from energy crises like the current one, British MPs and experts said, the BBC reported.

According to politicians and experts, the UK needs to switch to renewable energy sources to protect itself from energy crises. The current energy crisis has been fueled by rising gas prices, which, according to the publication, points to the UK’s heavy dependence on fossil fuels.

Adam Corlett, chief economist at the Resolution Foundation think tank, said the current energy crisis “highlights both our over-reliance on fossil fuels and how we should have done more to make every home well insulated.”

“The UK electricity bill crisis is far from over – and should serve as a warning to accelerate our transition to a net zero economy.” he stressed.

Last week British authorities announced an increase in the upper limit of energy prices was confirmed. Sam Hall, chairman of the Conservative Environment Network, said that the country “will face similar crises as long as it remains dependent on gas.”

On the same day that the UK’s energy price ceiling increased, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said he wanted to encourage more investment in oil and gas drilling in the North Sea. Green Party MP Caroline Lucas said the UK would not emerge from the energy crisis with a “quick turn to the fossil fuel era”.
