To smooth out the fluctuations, technologies are being developed that allow users to accumulate a certain amount of electricity, and then give it away at peak times. Researchers in the US have suggested using elevators that are in high-rise buildings for such purposes.

The elevator is not used constantly and more than half of the day, it does not work. Downtime can be used to generate power from gravity. The authors of the idea propose to use heavy containers for this, which the elevator will move to the upper floors.

And when the time comes for a heavy load, the containers will move down with acceleration, due to this, electricity will be generated.

Despite the strangeness of this idea, it may well be implemented, the researchers say. After all, all large buildings are already equipped with elevators, so there is no need for major changes in communications.

The only obstacle is the availability of free space above and below in skyscrapers, as well as the bearing capacity of the floors. To generate enough energy, the load must be heavy, and a solid foundation is needed to store it.
